Hello ...
I have been researching my Dad's family, his mother was a PITTROFF. I have a family photo that shows it was taken in Munich. Dad told me either his grandfather (Pittroff) or his grandmother (Haberstumpe/f) came from Danzig. I have been working on this for 20+ years.
Would someone PLEASE help me with the name Pittroff? Is it even German? Polish? Russian?
Found something today that said it most likely comes from a "sound variant" where the P sounds like a B, so BITTROFF, or whatever other spelling there may be (Bitrof, Bitroff, Bittroff, Bitrolf, etc :( My grandfather was born in Muenshberg, Federal Republic of Germany in 1861, Marion Benard Pittroff, I have his father (from a marriage certificate) as Thomas Pitroff (note the single T). I need help with Thomas' full name too ... Thomas Benard or Benard Thomas ? Thanks for your help ...
I hope someone has a hint. Some idea.

More possible interpretations
Hiello!
There are several interpretations for the surname Pittroff:
We can find the name we are looking for in Russia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and in Germany.
Especially in Germany, the name was taken from a piece of literature from the 13th century. To be more precise, from the epic “Biterolf and Dietleib”, which belongs to the Dietrich legend. The eponymous title character Bitterolf became Pittroff. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bite…
In the Russia / Bulgaria area, the surname Pittroff developed from the very popular nickname "Peter" => Petrov/Petroff => Pittroff. If the family comes from the Czech region, Pittroff can also be traced back to the place name Petrov, which can still be found in the Czech Republic today. Here is an overview of these places: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petr…
Which of these interpretations is the correct one for your case depends on the origin of the family, viewed far back in history.
Best regards
